Established in 18th September, 1961 CONCACAF Gold Cup is the men’s football competition which is organised by CONCACAF (The Confederation of North, Central America and Caribbean Association Football). Since then it generally held once after every two years. Last time it was staged in 2015 which was hosted in United States and the time has come again where it will be staged in next July, 2017 which will be the 24th edition. But the host nation is not selected yet as well as the venues are also unknown. Last edition in 2015, total 26 matches including final were placed in 14 different venues in the host nations United States. This time it would possibly be the same number of matches will be staged. # Qualified Teams: Total twelve teams from CONCACAF (Central America, North America and Caribbean) used to participate in this biggest football competition. Though, for upcoming edition of GC 2017, no teams have qualified yet. But from North America, Probably Mexico, Canada and United States would compete their. Due to the defending champion, Mexico automatically qualified for main tournament.
Besides, top four teams from Central American Zone where they will be selected from Copa Centroamericana 2017, top four teams from Caribbean Zone from Caribbean Cup 2017 and rest one team will be the winner between Caribbean zone fifth place and Central America zone fifth place.
Like before, next time also total twelve teams will compete in this historical football tournament where they will be divided into three groups and each group contains four teams. The tournament will be staged according to round robin formation like before. Each team will have to play three matches against rest three group mates where eight teams will qualify for knockout stage as well as quarter final.
Till now, total 23rd edition of Gold Cup has passed already where seven teams claimed all the trophy. The most successful team is Mexico which won ten titles of it and also the current champion. They defeated Jamaica by scoring 3 – 1 in 2015 GC final. United States is placed 2nd in position by winning five times titles. Costa Rica won three, Canada won twice, Honduras, Haiti and Guatemala are won one time each.
Unite States striker Clint Dempsey was selected the top goal scorer in 2015 edition of GC. He scored seven goals and claimed the Golden Boot Award where Mexican Andres Guardado scored six goals and achieved Golden Ball Award and Oribe Peralta scored four goals.
Clint Dempsey would possibly play in next edition of this tournament in 2017 and will be the trump card of team United States. The winner of 2017 and 2019 Gold Cup will have to play a play off match to qualify for FIFA Confederations Cup 2021. But, if the same team will win in both 2017 and 2019, then they will automatically approve for Confederations Cup.
