The 47th edition of the world’s oldest competitive football tournament has been postponed to 2021. The most beautiful game in the planet failed to get it’s place on the headline as the Corona Virus takes over. All the league matches have been suspended due to the outbreak of this pandemic. Footballers are out of action for the past couple of weeks and the spectators were not given the permission of entrance into the most of the arenas. To make things a bit bitter for the football lovers, finally CONMEBOL has announced the postponement of the Copa America 2020 for a year.
It has been a very very tough period for the terrestrials as the outbreak of such a dangerous virus has left the scientists as well as general people stunned. The pandemic has caused death of thousands of people all over the planet. Despite premising just from the China, the epidemic spread almost all over the world. However, the European countries have been the mostly sufferer due to this disturbance. Like all other normal day to day activities, football has also been stopped. Even the star of this beautiful game failed to get rid of this shocking situation as it affected numerous football players.
Copa America was set to start on the 12th June, 2020 following it’s 46th edition which took place a year ago in the Brazil. Colombia as well as Argentina will jointly host the upcoming revision of this competition. A total of 12 teams from 2 different confederations will take part in this tournament. 9 venues of 9 different cities will host the matches. It will be 31 day long tournament and the Latin American giants will fight each other to lift the silverware.
However, the Latin American confederation of football (CONMEBOL) has decided to postpone the tournament for 364 days. Now the tournament will start on 11th June, 2021 and the final will take place just a month later at the Colombian capital. Alejandro Domínguez, the president of Conmebol said that, it was an extraordinary measure for an unexpected situation. Therefore it responds to the fundamental need to avoid an exponential evolution of the virus. He also expressed his anxiety due to it’s presence in all the countries of the Member Associations of the Confederation. He further said that it was tough decision to take but they must safeguard at all times the health of our athletes and of all the agents who are part of the great family of South American football.
