Top Five Favorites Team to Win the Copa America 2020

March 1, 2020 by Paul Adam

Copa America 2020 is almost knocking at the door with the second successful summer this year. This year 12 teams are participating in the tournament, where two invited nations are Australia and Qatar. These 12 teams have been divided into two groups; Group A and Group B. The event will start on 12th June and it will last until 12th July. The fixture has already been out and it was confirmed by FIFA. In the group stage, there will be 30 matches until the next round. Brazil is the defending champion of Copa America in 2019. Now this year who will be the winner? Here are the top five that has a high chance of winning Copa America 2020.

Chile

Chile won the Copa America title both in 2015 and 2016 by beating the same team Argentina on penalties. They also got into the semi-final in last year’s tournament. Chile now is a very balanced and strong team where most players are on the ageing side with lots of experience. The country’s established core including the likes of Arturo Vidal, Gary Medel, Alexis Sanchez and more have entered their thirties.

Now placing Argentina, Uruguay and Chile would expect to qualify for the knock-out stages but how far they can go, remains to be seen. Being a strong team and looking at past achievement they are in the first place that may have a good chance of winning CA 2020.

Uruguay

Uruguay is at the tournament as fourth favorites, despite big tension hanging over the record 15-times winners. Talisman and record goalscorer Luis Suarez is facing difficulty to make this summer’s Copa America after undergoing knee surgery in Barcelona, whereas Edinson Cavani has been struggling with fitness and form at PSG and failed to engineer a move out of the French capital in January.

Should both or either player fail to make the tournament, Maxi Gomez from Valencia, in likely to lead the line ahead of a talented young forward and midfielder including Federico Valverde from Real Madrid and Rodrigo Bentancur from Juventus. As they have lifted the trophy nine years ago, this year they would need to improve their performance in order to win the trophy this time around.

Colombia

Colombia is one of the two host countries for the tournament combined with Argentina, and Colombia only won once this trophy and they would want to win it for the second time as they are the host and favorite. The 2001 CA winners have suffered unfortunate penalty that exists both in 2018 world cup and in Copa America 2019. A relief, as they secure a third-place finish after losing to Chile in the semi-finals of the Copa America Centenario five years ago.

Star duo Radamel Falcao and James Rodriguez have good form to be key personnel ahead of this summer’s home tournament, where Luis Muriel will hope to make a big impression at Champions League debutants Atlanta.

Colombia is coached by a former Manchester United assistant Carlos Quieroz, Colombia contains Premier League representation in the form of Davinson Sanchez, Yerry Mina, Jefferson Lerma, Alfredo Morelos, and Steven Alzate is likely to make their final squad.

Brazil

Now brazil is defending champion of Copa America and once again they are the favorite to lift the trophy again, as they have secured their ninth CA trophy with an impressive campaign last summer, scoring just one goal against Peru in the final. It was the first victory after a decade for Brazil and therefore, Selecao will be in a confident mood in order to reach the high stage and lift the trophy again.

Tite is the head coach of Brazil and in his command, they only lost 2 matches in their 16 fixtures throughout 2019. The coach has many choices of wealthy talented players like Philippe Coutinho, Alisson, Roberto Firmino, Lucas and Paris Saint-Germain’s Neymar remain the star player in Brazil, as well as in PSG.

Neymar missed the last year’s success with an ankle injury, and will no doubt want to make up for that absence this summer despite a difficult period in Paris.

Neymar is now 28 years old and appeared 100 times as a selecao for the Brazil team and scored 61 goals, just one goal behind the legendary Ronaldo and then moving behind only Pele as Brazil’s all-time record goalscorer.

Argentina

Will Lionel Messi and Argentina be able to put an end to their major tournament failings in this edition of Copa America 2020?

Argentina is one of the famous teams in the world and a great footballing nation that endured terrible bad luck in the finals of major tournaments in recent times, in 2014 World Cup losing in the extra-time and later losing consecutively in Copa America 2015,2016 respectively against Chile on penalties.

Without an international trophy after almost three decades, Argentina would surely want to do something this summer in Copa America; where they can win something for Messi as well as for fans from all over the world.

Lionel Scaloni is the head coach of Argentina and alongside Messi, they have players like Sergio Aguero, Paulo Dybala, Lautaro Martinez and so on.

Scolani has bounced back from a semi-final defeat in last season’s Copa America by guiding Argentina to a seven-game unbeaten run including impressive victories over Mexico (4-0), Brazil (1-0), Ecuador (6-1), alongside draws with Uruguay and Germany.
